One of the most popular instruments to learn how to play is the piano. If you are reading this, you may have even started to take some piano lessons yourself. Cheers to You. You have begun a great and satisfying journey. As a piano instructor, one of the first questions I hear from my students is how long will it take for me to become a great pianist. This answer varies from student to student, but I will try to answer this question the best way I can.

How Long it Takes to Master the Piano

Learning to play the piano can take up a good portion of your time. A student who is truly looking to become an expert pianist will practice up to six to eight hours a day. They will also take lessons, which can take up two to three hours a day. It takes at least 10,000 hours to become an expert on anything, according to Malcolm Gladwell. If you want to become a piano expert within 20 years, that means you will need to practice for 90 minutes every day. Most of my students only practice an average of 30 minutes per day, which means it will take them 60 years to become a very skilled piano player.

If you were to ask a pianist who competes in musical shows, they would tell you the number of hours is even higher to become an expert. The winners will tell you that it takes at least 25,000 hours to become a greatly skilled pianist. They also say other variables such as your age and who critics your performance, play a big factor into how fast you become an expert.
